You are looking at offering scarves (kha btags) for sale to worshippers at Sera’s gift shop, which also sells Sera memorabilia and cold drinks. Pan out and to the right. The building you see in the distance is called Lower Laptong (bslabs stong ’og ma), probably a residential building before 1959. Continuing right, at the intersection of the two stairways, is the southeast corner of the Bati Apartment House (sba ti spyi khang). The long row of stairs on the right, where the children are sitting, leads up to the Jé College Assembly Hall (not visible). If you continue to pan right, you will see a sitting area, where tourists and worshippers often enjoy a cold drink in the summertime. Beneath that is the so-called Sera “Sand Street” (bye gzhung), which is now paved.
