Description:
The article studies the socio-cultural organization of the inhabitants of Helambu. The article briefly compares the kinship and marriage patterns of Helambu Sherpas and Khumbu Sherpas with Tibetans of Lhasa. The greatest differences exist between the Helambu Sherpas and the Lhasa Tibetans. The Khumbu Sherpas, although differing from Lhasa Tibetans in possessing clans and in their spouse kinship terminology, still seem much more similar to the Lhasans than to the Helambu Sherpas with their "incestuous" (by Lhasa and Khumbu standards) cross-cousin preferred marriages. It includes a diagram illustrating kinship relations of Helambu Sherpas, Khumbu Sherpas, and Lhasa Tibetans. (Rajeev Ranjan Singh 2007-01-01)
