Description:
Published in 2001, the Insight Pocket Guide Tibet is a simple, user-friendly guide for traveling from Lhasa to Kathmandu. The strengths of this book are its maps and easy to follow style. Because of its narrow focus (it only covers a small portion of cultural Tibet), you won't find all the details that are in similar travel guides like Lonely Planet or Footprint. What you will find is basic essential information about sight-seeing in Lhasa and the major cities en-route to Kathmandu. Specific information like hotel and restaurant recommendations (including address and contact information) in given, as well as general logistical advice such as when to go, what to wear, being safe, and so on. Overall, this book is fine for someone touring through these particular parts of central Tibet over the course of a few days and could be used in lieu of a larger, more detailed travel guidebook that covers all of Tibet. Also helpful the full-size, pullout map included in the back of the book.
The Insight Pocket Guide is divided into three sections. The first focuses on Tibetan history and culture. The second consists of a series of chapters that focus on actually traveling from Lhasa to Kathmandu. This sections goes into detail about the logistics of getting to different sites like monasteries, castles, temples etc. en-route from Lhasa to Kathmandu and what you can do once you've arrived at those sites. The final section consists of several chapters focusing on practical information about being in Tibet such as tips on food, personal health, money, government policies for travel, and so on.
