It uses the principle of binding certain combinations of key strokes to specific Unicode character. This assumes that one has a Unicode diacritic font with all the required diacritic characters, as outlined in the <span class="nobr"><img src="/" alt="external link: " title="external link"/><a href="http://www.thlib.org/tools/thl-diacritic-chart.php" target="rwikiexternal">THL diacritic chart</a></span>. </p><h3 class="heading-h2"><a name="OpenOfficeDiacriticMacroExtension" class="anchorpoint"></a>Open Office Diacritic Macro/Extension</h3><p class="paragraph">The THL Open Office Diacritic input macro is a means for entering Unicode diacritics into an Open Office document. They are presently contained in a library of macros that needs to be imported into Open Office in the following way:</p><ol><li>Download the Zip file <span class="nobr"><img src="/" alt="external link: " title="external link"/><a href="https://collab.itc.virginia.edu/access/content/group/c06fa8cf-c49c-4ebc-007f-482de5382105/THDL%20Technologies/Diacritic%20Input/THLDiacriticMacro-OO-v1.0.zip" target="rwikiexternal">here </a></span></li> <li>Unzip it to a convenient location</li> <li>In Open office go to Tools --> Macros --> Organize Macros --> Open Office.org Basic</li> <li>In the window that popus up click Organizer</li> <li>Click the Libraries Tab</li> <li>Click Import button</li> <li>Find the unzipped folder, it will contain a "THL" folder, in there choose "script.xlb"</li> <li>Click Open</li> <li>Close Organizer Window and Basic Window</li></ol><p class="paragraph">You have now loaded the macros. Next, you will need to assign them to key strokes or actions, by doing the following: </p><ol><li>Choose Tools --> Customize</li> <li>Click the Keyboard Tab</li> <li>In the Functions Category pane, click the plus next to Open Office.org Macros</li> <li>Click the plus next to "usr"</li> <li>Click the plus next to "THL"</li> <li>Highlight "THLDiacritics"</li> <li>Under the function pane a list of macros will then appear.
