Catalog Entry: Blacksmith: Beating Metal with Anvil
GENERAL CONTENT
Title (English): Blacksmith: Beating Metal with Anvil
Caption (English): Blacksmith (gaonbura) at work in Nionglopunga in front of a morung.
Description (English): Beating heated metal using a small section of old railway line as an anvil. (F27428) Blacksmith using bellows. "At first we climbed to the village of Nionglopunga (apparently not Linglopunga) as I had thought yesterday. The gaonbura who knew Ursula was prepared to demonstrate the working of the bellows and forge. It consists of two upright bamboos and pistons fringed with chicken feathers. The unusual fact is that the blacksmith is working alone, - first he works the double-bellows until a piece of iron is hot, and then he beats it into shape with a hammer and then cools it in a section of bamboo."
